The Everlasting Trip
This night doesn’t want to end Smells from closed restaurants
from underarms from turned off lights on staircases of cheap hotels
from bloomed trees and cigarette butts thrown in the streets Big
buses parked still maintaining inside them a thickened
yet silenced hum of day momentary touch of bodies In front
of their windshields
steamed up by the breath of night the wild boys stop for
a while
re-arrange their hair locks they leave In the telephone booths
some make phone calls from darkness to darkness nothing is
heard –
perhaps they are the new dead refusing to die at such a young age
perhaps they claim
their share of love and that of the street lights – starlit
streets
from the deep cigarette inhaling of lovers in an anxious hunt, No no
sleep won’t deprive us again a bit more of our lives Goodnight
strange bed
let the dreams wear the white sheets and let the old hotel manager
wait
with his head leaning on the thick guest book Ai Fontana
di Trevi
here we are with the waters and the statues I’ll jump dressed up
into the fountain
to touch this exquisite marble leg And then
wet soaking wet I’ll stand shivering by the thrill
of stars
tossing all my coins in the water so that I’ll remain penniless
not having
even a small contribution for the Shadowy Ferryman so that
he may leave me in the World Above
to travel endlessly from Athens to Rome and from Rome
to Athens
