THE BIRD THAT SPOKE THE TRUTH

Forgetfulness covered the past, the unknown besieges the house:

ghosts of things we loved and lost;

and now only the cob webs know the future while nostalgia

for the unknown has won us from young age and

       loneliness

promised us the long distances. Oh, the children we were with

       those long neckties

for a childhood so short; yet Maria and the evening breeze that shivered

among the ribbons of her hat were

in different constellations; we never reached her. And I’ve loved

passionately everything I was never meant to know. And

I’ve lived all my life in a dream

and immortality in a few cognacs.

One morning a bird sat on the tree on the other side of the road and

       chirped something.

Oh, if I could understand what it wanted to tell me perhaps I’d had

discovered the meaning of the world.

Swamped, a novel by Manolis Aligizakis

One morning Eteo asked Mitch to meet him, and within half an hour, he entered Eteo’s office, wondering what this was all about. He didn’t have to wonder for long.

“Have a seat, Mitch,” Eteo said without any preamble. “I had a meeting with Rebecca Horton. She has put the wheels in motion for a new company incorporated for me with the name Alexa. You’ll serve on the board of directors along with Peter, the engineer, and George Beaton, the mining engineer.”

“You’re sure you want me as a director?” Mitch’s eyes opened wide and a faint smile played across his face.

“Why not? You know the business very well. You know what needs to be done.”

“Yes, of course. But do you also want me to manage this one, or have you got someone else in mind?”

“No, I want you to manage it as well,” Eteo assured him. “Rebecca will make all the appropriate disclosures. You need only run the day to day operations until we sell it, like any other time.”

“Sounds good. What’s the next step?”

“When Rebecca has the papers ready, you need to go and pick up the subscription forms from her and then go after shareholders. I’ll give you the list of people we want to involve in this one, and then you will fill out the forms in their presence and collect the cheques. After that it’s only a matter of depositing the funds in the bank and getting the records to the accountant for the financial statements. All as usual, right?”

Mitch smiled. He knew the process well. “No problem” he replied, then added, “By the way, I have to add a thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me.”

“I’m glad you like what you do and I’m sure we’ll find a few more opportunities for you as time goes by.”

At this, Mitch’s eyes grew teary and his lips trembled when he shook Eteo’s hand before leaving the office. On his way to the elevator, he stopped for a few seconds to say hello to Logan. He didn’t have to tell Logan how he felt about his friends’ father. His face said it all. Logan only smiled and said. “Good man, Mitch, very good.”

“No, hey, thanks a lot, man, I mean for helping me with your dad. I’ll never forget it.”

“Say no more. Just follow his advice and do as he says. You won’t regret it.”

“Count on it, pal,” Mitch replied.

“You know,” he added, “your dad has stood by me better than my own father,” his eyes misty with emotion.

“That’s my dad, Mitch, that’s my dad,” Logan said, his pride clear in his voice.

Mitch nodded his agreement and went to make the arrangements Eteo required.
