Yannis Ritsos – Poems, Volume III

Helen’s House

The trees hide the view from the window;

big leaves, thin leaves, curly, elongated;

a white plate full of fruit on the table.

A child’s bicycle, the wooden horse

among the cicadas’ songs.

                                           What secret sequence

has raised this insignificant landscape to the level

of immortality held over the void only by a green

branch as if from a finger of a beautiful, young God?

Kariotakis-Polydouri, The Tragic Love Story

POEM BY KOSTAS KARIOTAKIS

SEA

However the heart that was stirred

by a deadly passion will never relax

Clouds seem gigantic and silvery

onto the leaden sky

when the sun reflects on them

and the wind blows on them

they ran behind the mountain.

Sea the beast and its colorful surface

dark blue at the far side

nearer light green and closer gray

as if dressed in a strange garment

POEM BY NAPOLEO LAPATHIOTIS

SECRET

Some souls are made of marble

others of pain or smiles

and one is made of rose petals

though I won’t reveal who.

My heart would suffer if I exposed you

so I put a lock on my mouth

and though many wise people are around me

no one has managed to guess yet.

Some souls are made of crystals

others are made of tears

and one is made of rose petals

though I won’t reveal who.

I’ve sworn never to disclose even unto death,

but then, who knows, perhaps someday…

Something is burning my lips! Better

to stop this song right now and go no further.
