Summer Solstice

Down among the laurels

down among the white oleanders

down on the jagged rock

by our feet the sea like a glass.

Remember the chiton you saw

opening and falling over nakedness

and falling around the ankles

dead—if only this sleep would fall like that

among the laurels of the dead.

He raised the knife and momentarily he noticed

a long part of the night flashing on the blade; he saw

his own eyes in the black flash of the knife.

He let the knife on the table so he could cross himself.

He cut the bread and took his supper with venerable

movements as if he had opened the window and was

looking at the moon.

Three Poems About Sorrow

My time in nature

a waste of time.

I don’t become younger

I don’t age

nothing of my heart

touches the stars.
