Poem by Dionysios Solomos
ANTHOULA
Please fall in love with me, oh Anthoula,
my sweet and golden hope,
just as I fell in love when I first saw you.
Your eyes looked down at the green grass
and sorrow adorned them with two pearls.
You cried, oh Anthoula,
remembering your mother
who left you an orphan in this world.
Ah, yes, my love, be careful of the world’s deceit
which with its cunning words abducts all precious girls.
Oh, where will you go alone,
my innocent dove? So many traps await you.
Oh Anthoula, come instead to me!
