Tasos Livaditis-Poems, Volume II

POEMS 1958-1964

Trial

It was during the time of that strange court case

           that created so much buzz.

People filled the corridors and the big hall early

           in the morning

and although it rained people stood outside in

the sidewalks many blocks around the courthouse.

Each person remembered their own life. Many cried.

           Others were drunk and cursed.

But when time came and the judges walked in,

quietness spread all around; soon after, too soon

perhaps, the judgment was announced. Traitor.

Death. The merciless voice of justice was heard.

A wave of relief passed over the people. Bells

chimed somewhere far away, perhaps even lambs

            bleated.

Suddenly quietness again when the second

judgement was announced: Innocent. Death.

The merciless voice of justice was heard again.

Then one judgment followed the other.

You hated. Death. You fell in love. Death.

You denied. Death. You obeyed. Death

And we, one by one, passed before the judges

who after a short deliberation declared

their judgment: You cowered. Death. You

dared. Death. You cheated. Death.

You forgave. Death.

And we all returned home to our warm supper

peaceful that we had paid our depth

with that judgment.

Swamped, a novel

“So what’s up?” Robert asked, breaking the ice after a silence that had almost grown awkward.

“Platinum Propertiesseems to be the name of the moment …” Mario replied, pausing significantly and looking at the others before adding, “The only game in town right now if you ask me. My advice is stay in for a while and don’t let the quick gains spook you out of this one.”

“Specifics?” Eteo asked.

“Too many to sum up easily,” Mario answered. “Eddie has hit the good one this time. They’re bringing along major players from Asia, and they say Nomura Investments is ready to buy every available share regardless of the price. I hear that two mutual fund managers will start coming in at the three to four dollar point.”

He stopped and lifted his glass, sniffed the brandy and took a good sip before adding, “I’ve heard various scenarios, and every one of them makes a lot of sense and means at least a good few dollars in a short time, perhaps no more than a year.”

Eteo had his own brandy ritual. He liked to swirl the alcohol around the glass for a good minute while he warmed it in his palm. Only then would he sniff it a couple of times before taking his first sip. Robert had no ritual. He simply drank his Napoleon slowly and steadily.

But they were all thinking about Platinum Properties now, each man’s brain calculating the potential profits based on the number of shares they held in their respective accounts, each making his own plan for anticipating the best possible time to sell at the top of the market.

“It all sounds pretty good, Mario,” Eteo said. “I’ll keep my people in as long as I can.”

“That’s the way to go, Eteo,” Mario replied, smiling broadly. “But now to my new baby. It’s called Nostra Ventures, and it’s going fast. I’ll have a prospectus on your desk very soon. What do you say?”

Eteo had never heard of Nostra Ventures.

“Your Nostra?” he asked, “when did you—”

To Koskino

TEXT 14

Chapter 2 Verse 14-15

TRANSLATION

O son of Kunti, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.

PURPORT

In the proper discharge of duty, one has to learn to tolerate nonpermanent appearances and disappearances of happiness and distress. According to Vedic injunction, one has to take his bath early in the morning even during the month ofMagha(January-February). It is very cold at that time, but in spite of that a man who abides by the religious principles does not hesitate to take his bath. Similarly, a woman does not hesitate to cook in the kitchen…
