WHEN SPRING COMES

When spring comes smiling
you’ll wear your new clothes and
you’ll come to grasp my hands
my old friend and
although nobody expects your return
I feel your heartbeats and
a flower springing up from
your mature, embittered memory
one train whistles in the night
or a faraway unexpected ship
will bring you back along with our youth and
our dreams and
perhaps you haven’t forgotten anything, really
while the return is always worthy more
than any of my love and your love
my old friend

ΟΤΑΝ ΜΙΑ ΑΝΟΙΞΗ

Όταν μιαν άνοιξη χαμογελάσει,
θα ντυθείς μία καινούργια φορεσιά
και θα έρθεις να σφίξεις τα χέρια μου
παλιέ μου φίλε.
Κι ίσως κανείς δε σε προσμένει να γυρίσεις
μα εγώ νιώθω τους χτύπους τους καρδιάς σου
κι ένα άνθος φυτρωμένο
στην ώριμη, πικραμένη σου μνήμη
Κάποιο τρένο, τη νύχτα, σφυρίζοντας,
ή ένα πλοίο, μακρινό κι απροσδόκητο
