Θολά τ’ αστέρια μες στη στέρνα,

η στέρνα μες στη μέση της παλιάς αυλής,

σαν τον καθρέφτη της κλεισμένης κάμαρας.


Γύρω στη στέρνα κάθονται τα περιστέρια,

άκρη-άκρη στο φεγγάρι οι ασβεστωμένες γλάστρες,

γύρω-γύρω στην πληγή μας τα τραγούδια μας.




The stars are muddy in the cistern,

the cistern in the middle of the old yard,

like a mirror of the closed room.


The doves sit around the cistern,

whitewashed flowerpots sit end-to-end in the moon,

around and around our wound: our songs.
