This was a formidable essay that I was planning to write, alas, the NY Times got me first! It’s all right – I’ll spare them this time… “An American in a strange land” is an adept portrayal of the US of today through the perpective of Jim Yardey and the lens of Tomas Munita. From now on when people ask me what is like to live in this country, this article constitutes -to my mind- the most comprehensive answer. In short, it is the story of two foreign correspondents as they returned after several years in the homeland and re-explored it by the means of an extended road trip. Coincidentally, that trip included Austin although instead of the interminable music festivities they featured a gun range.
